In Meinen Glücklichen Stunden

Frühe Zeitschriften ~ 1898

Rainer Maria Rilke

In My Glad Hours

Early Journals ~ 1898

Rainer Maria Rilke

In my glad hours, I will make a city of your smile, a distant city that shines and lives. I will take one word of yours to be an island on which birches stand, or fir trees, quite still and ceremonial. I will receive your glance as a fountain in which things can disappear and above which the sky trembles, both eager and afraid to fall in.

I will know that all of this exists, that one can enter the city, that I have glimpsed this island and know exactly when there is no one else beside that fountain. But if I appear to hesitate, it is because I am not sure whether it is the forest through which we are walking or my own mood that is shaded and dark.

Who knows: maybe Venice, too, is just a feeling.

“In My Glad Hours" (a translation of a poem from Rilke's Frühe Journal or Diaries of a Young Poet) was composed by Rilke in 1898. This particular version appears in A YEAR WITH RILKE translated and edited by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows published in 2009 ~ Copywright © 2009 by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows. All rights reserved.

These beautiful lines appear in many collections of Rilke's early works and religious-themed poetry. The specific date it was entered into his journal falls within this year. We see here a man who is able to think both within the confines of christianity and in the same instant step outside and way beyond all religion and, yet, as it were holding a line to what might be regarded as the very basic tenets of personal faith.

Here, surely, is an object lesson for everyone.
