Moments from History
Volume 2 : November 21, 2014
This was scheduled for republication on November 21, 2014 but was moved forward to October 16, 2020, in light of the beheading, that day, of Monsieur Samuel Paty, a History Teacher,
in Paris, France, out of respect for, and in solidarity with,
the Citizens of Paris and the Greater French People.
THIS PAST WEEK we have seen unspeakable acts of cruelty from around the world, but chiefly in those parts of Iraq and Syria currently occupied by DAESH, the so-called islamic-state-caliphate.
Wanton atrocity is meant to cause such fear, such panic, that any and all opposition melts away.
And it's an understandable reaction in the short term. The Nazis employed this tactic in the invasion of Poland and, eighteen months later, in the invasion of Russia.
It also has the effect of screwing up our perspective on everything, and seeing the threat to us in exaggerated form.
That is the tactic of the bully. It has been since the beginning of time.
*
In World War II we saw the most unspeakable acts carried out against innocent people - acts that were ‘justified ‘by the perpetrators because, they argued, it was in line with their ideology of genetics - so twisted and demented, divorced from reality.
And yet it held the world in its vice-like grip for twelve long years before it was ruthlessly removed after ignominiously defeating it and seeing its perpertrators consigned to oblivion, albeit with mercy. This aspect lost on all things for which this so-called caliphate offers.
But then perspective returns.
*
We take stock of what is happening and we realise that life must go on and must be fought for, on our terms, not the terms of the bully, the bigot, the ideologue, the pyschopath.
We see the most amazing programmes about the richness and diversity of Nature, of Humankind, of the Universe. We see the most incredible things revealed to us by people who commit their lives to bringing information, facts and intelligence to us that, in one fell swoop, assigns the bigots and bullies to history, except for the small matter of hunting every one of them down and bringing them to justice.
*
Religious bigotry:
cannot comprehend the vastness of human intellect
cannot comprehend the actual existence of this Universe except through stories and fables and half-truths
cannot comprehend the reality and unimpeded power of science and physics, of exploring the Universe, of studying Nature and every life-form.
*
The religious mind works backwards.
Its Deity must be like us.
We are the perfection and personification of God in human form.
Evolution is turned on its head.
Human nature demands that it is god in human form. Therefore, whatever it decrees is perfection.
*
Such arrogance exposes in the full blinding glare of light, lives that are moribund, bland, decrepit and feeding upon a lust for killing in such savagery that they convince themselves must be the will of the deity they deign to worship, the deity that they have created.
They are without cause. They are without even one shred of credibility.
They yearn for credibility. They yearn to see 'boots on the ground' so that they can then declare themselves to be of the same status as any of the professional armed forces arrayed against them.
*
We do not go to war at the behest of bigots, bullies and pyschopaths.
We choose the time to wage war.
We choose the time to act and the means with which we will act.
We choose the weaponry from the vast arsenal we maintain
When we strike, we do so, as does the thief in the night.
*
It matters not their family background, these thugs, outcasts and bullies. They are chaff in the wind.
Tyranny eventually destroys itself by eating itself from within. Loyalty to some deity or some idiot proclaiming himself to be just one step removed from that status, has no root, no foundation. In time, there is disagreement and then warring factions.
When any people decide that an ideology - whether it be ancient, or whether it be modern e.g Nazism and Communism or this burgeoning new word ‘populism’ - is the only acceptable way to live life, then those people have given up on life itself, living instead a delusion; and delusion always manifests itself in unspeakable cruelty.
And let us not flinch in adding to this, the ideology of extreme religious fundamantalism on the one hand, and extreme athiestic fundamentalism on the other hand. All are repugnant, arrogant, extreme, rooted merely in the shallow dirt of ideology.
*
ISIL | DAESH will be defeated.
It will cave from within. The great civilisations of this world, and I mean every part of this world, including those who are currently threatened by this monstrous gang, will overcome it.
*
Our task:
Be vigilant.
Report anything suspicious.
Never underestimate the ability of our intelligence services, in all countries, to piece together information that will enable governments to take the correct action and, as we have seen this week in London, the arrest of three men who had plotted to behead a member of the public in England.
Arrested just before Remembrance Sunday, today they were committed for trial to the Old Bailey. That they laughed through the committal shows just what we are up against.
That their arrest was swift and without warning also says much for our intelligence and police services, not to mention our armed forces. All work seemlessly as one, regardless of what pop dramas are flung at us by the endless stream of film fiction of corrupt intelligence, corrupt police, and so on. Film directors have never had it so good. Writers fall over themselves to out-Fleming Felming. In short, drivel.
*
Let us therefore brace ourselves as people of conscience, and as people who know that we intend this world to not be threatened by DAESH and its corrupt and evil ways. Let us also know when it is the right moment to respond beyond our airstrikes.
We are a reluctant people. But put a great cause before the people, demonstrate to the people that our institutions and way of life are under threat, then suddenly the people rise as one - and it is a curious aspect that applies to all of the English-speaking Peoples.
