LET US NOT be troubled by the man who upturns the world, is the cause of death of thousands, but rather just sit quietly and listen to how Intenrational Diplomacy is spoken and reasoned out.
In my childhood in the 1950s my Mum often tald me of her fear of Invasion, of paratroopers, of subjugation.
I was really frightened Ken. I had nightmares of Nazie paratroopers jumping out over Cheltenham. [Note 1]
I spoke about it to Grandad. “Dad, what are we going to do. I’m very frightened.”
And do you know, Ken? Your Grandad stood there and listened and then gave that little giggle and the hint of a smile…
And then uttered one sentence that I’ve never ever forgotten.
“Oh, don’t you go worrying like that dear. That won’t happen. You just listen to Mr Churchill! ”
And that’s exactly what Mum did. And in 2015, in Mum’s penultimate year, we were both watching the Remembrance Service at the Royal Albert Hall on the TV. Suddenly, the voice of Winston Churchill came out of the TV. The famous We Shall NEVER surrender speech.
Well! I watched Mum step back in time from the mists of Alzheimers and Dementia… suddenly, Mum leaned forward in the armchair, speaking every word along with Churchill, even the voice intonations and then on those four words, Mum punched the air with a tiny fist on the penultimate word NEVER; then turning to me with a beaming smile and sparkling blue eyes - and spoke - as Mum did in her prime, in her hey day.
You see, Ken? THAT’s what I mean!!
And somehow, we had bridged a gap of almost sixty years from that first recollection to me in the 1950s.
