Cameos
What Are They?
Strictly, a cameo is a theatrical definition, a special appearance, say, by a well known actor in a very popular series, but which might last less than a couple of minutes.
We think in the present. We think of the future. The younger we are, the less we dwell on the past. That is no criticism of youth.
As we live our futures, measuring the advance along individual timelines, we develop the gift of reflection.
As age advances to mid, then late, we reconstruct our progress by literally constructing platforms and climbs – each absolutely unique – upon which we view our lives. It is a kind of public exhibition without realising it.
Speaking with my elder sister this week, at a family gathering, there was much chit–chat, as is the right of families and friends gathered to enjoy mutual company, often from distant places, counties, countries, continents, even. My sister explained to a friend why she and her husband always enjoyed hot chocolate when out. She explained how she remembers standing on the chair and being taught by our grandmother (Webb) to heat the milk on the gas stove but to be careful not to boil it.
I was three years younger. But I remember this clearly. I received the same lesson. I think I did the same, except I’d often have camp coffee which greatly appealed to me because of the logo and the connection to Scotland and India.
As an infant in the 1950s, I clearly remember equating the kilt to our British identity. Should any Scot read this, have no fear; even though I am off–kilter at the dismemberment of our nation, I stand with Scotland, and I’m very proud of the Scots lineage through my maternal grandmother (Marshall).
This series highlights moments, often read about by other writers, journalists, bloggers, commentators, etc., and are summed up in two very Gloucestershire sayings:
“Well, I never knew that!”
“Well, look now, fancy that!”
About that Camp Coffee label! I took a look at a few just now online. I cannot remember precisely the artistry I was familiar with, but as this memory is of in the 1950s, I’m pretty sure the artwork was not one of subervience. Observing the brand labels, one sees how they metamorphosed.
The Cameos are simply brief articles or segments pop in and out of my day’s collective events. You’ll see what I mean when you read the Cameo, Nightingale.
