The Day's Best Moments

Journal

Volume 2 : November 20, 2021

THERE IS a time in each day that, without knowing why, I simply experience that "dovetail emotion”.

I have already risen, brushed teeth, shaved, showered and and put on the day’s fresh clothes laid out in readiness. Coffee in the garden ~ very deep, and still, today.

The heating has gone off and the house is warm for the morning.

In the archive room, seated at the family yew dining table of half a century, is life and history an observer of comings and goings, an awareness of the hundreds who have sat here; family, friends, celebrations, Christmases, remembrances; or recalling the many delightful buffét displays, gatherings ~ standing, sitting, laughter, choosing.

... The serious discussions...

The fulcrum, when things that have gone terribly wrong, would seat themselves at this yew table, problems would iron out and move away, helped by coffee, tea, or whatever best suited the occasion.

The clock ticks so beautifully. There is peace in this room. A hamony between present and past, between the immediate and history.

The gathering of 900 years of ancestry in a house that is still only nine years old.

This is the day’s best moment. To sit quietly, to read, to break fast, to write marginal notes, to feel an inner gratitude to the lives and works of others, authors, their families - worldwide - and to be, simply, at peace.

Yes, these are the day’s best moments.

Ken Webb is a writer and proofreader. His website, kennwebb.com, showcases his work as a writer, blogger and podcaster, resting on his successive careers as a police officer, progressing to a junior lawyer in succession and trusts as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, a retired officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and latterly, for three years, the owner and editor of two lifestyle magazines in Liverpool.

He also just handed over a successful two year chairmanship in Gloucestershire with Cheltenham Regency Probus.

Pandemic aside, he spends his time equally between his city, Liverpool, and the county of his birth, Gloucestershire.

In this fast-paced present age, proof-reading is essential. And this skill also occasionally leads to copy-editing writers’ manuscripts for submission to publishers and also student and post graduate dissertations.
