The Editor

Editing is not proofreading. That is a different discipline. I edit copy, that is to say, scripts, articles and manuscripts, typeface, call it what you will, I read and edit. I make suggestions. I may delete. I may suggest in a marginal note an alternative descriptive sentence. My starting point is this. Reduce the word count by one third minimum, better still, by half. Yes, but that would be half of what I’ve written. True. That is our start point. Next?

The Gallop

There is nothing quite like the early morning on the Rides of Worcestershire. The gentle walk, the imperceptible slip into the sitting trot; my beauty knows the routine, already she’s anticipating the lift from the saddle as we slip into the rising trot … pause as we slip alongside early walkers, the greeting, warm, friendly… now ten yards t’other side my Beauty see’s the Ride stretching ahead of her for two miles, we roll into the canter, that’s it Girl, just roll gently, gather your pace, get into your stride; she senses the slight shift, I’m leaning forward now, ever so gently giving more rein, now the fast canter; hold still Beauty, hold still; her ears attuned to my every syllable; we move to the rise, we pass the gorse on the heath, a dash of blazing early morning yellow; now I go silent; she knows the routine… now the full rein released, my hair mingling with her mane, her body outstretched at full gallop… oh what joy it is, we become one, one movement, one rolling motion, hardly a breath from her, it is as if we fly upon the wings of the wind…

Well, lad, our bro Angus has a point. Angus was born in Shetland and our sissies and family live on the island of Orkney. Me? Well, as you can see, Alasdhair and I are twins. Al is in Edinburgh doing his finals, and I’m Glaswegian. And here’s where it gets a tad messy. I’m all for Scottish Independence, but I don’t buy into all the historical hype that both sides try stirring up. But Alasdhair, the wee bairn, he popped out seven minutes after me, he’s very much for the Union.

If I look at this artistic depiction
of Gloucestershire in the mind’s eye,
by covering my vision
with a haze or lace cloth,
the colours blur
ever so slightly
and I see more naturally.

A family that spends time

as well as fairgrounds
and amusement parks
is a family that is send
down into the ground
the deepest roots
strong, life-supporting
ever sustaining.

a living nightmare both by night and by day.

Alasdhair

haha! Typical. Rob always makes the point with his I’m older than you by seven minutes. Love him to bits for it. And he weighs it all up well. We’re just an ordinary family, and all of us have different views and opinions. But at the day’s end, when we need to, and this is not just peculiar to Scotland, we find it in Wales, Northern Ireland and England. When we’re threatened without, say, like a Putin bod trying to do to us what he’s doing to Ukraine, well, all of us have a curious way of suddenly coming together.

This really came home when the late Queen died at Balmoral. The world couldn’t seem to get its head around that for seven days we were very aware of our Scots heritage and that is something that binds us all deep, deep down.

My view? Sure. I hope we stay within the Union. But if the Scottish people vote for independence then I stand with them and we sort out how to move forward within these British Isles and still love and support each other. it’s called freedom and democracy. And we all know what happened to that nerd who tried it on in 1940!

Right, must go, otherwise, I’ll be late for lectures, and this one I really do NOT want to miss, as the visiting professor is David Olusoga OBE. When Pr. Olusoga speaks, he always has my unmitigated attention.

I have no patience with closed and narrow minds. I am equally blunt. Be gone. Be away with you. You deserve not to see the light of day or to gaze upon the lush pastures and grasslands of Verdant Nature.
