To Write

Journal

Volume 2

WITH conversational poetry (in the manner of Harold Norse) whilst the draft is in stanza form, with no intent towards prose, the form often lends itself equally to prose. This was written in 2015 and upon revisiting, I examined it afresh in light of a fellow writer’s observation - he is highly skilled in rhyme and meter - and for whom the poem had been written by way of encouragement. This is how writers work together. There is a meeting of the minds. I like that.

To Write

NEW LIFE. LIFE in abundance. LIFE to be seized. LIFE to be lived. LIFE that expels from the lungs as spirit from soul, trial and tribulation, heartache, illness, death.

A writer's work demands perfection, wide-ranging knowledge of all manner of affairs. And writers work together even by landline, that most precious, priceless communication that niftily sidesteps the casualness and vulgarity of social media.

Notes are compared. Readings are given. Soundings taken. Joy abounds both ends of the line as listener realises there is uniqueness in the voice, in the argument, in the rhyme and metre, conversely from the other end, in the prose of reasoned argument and debate.

Cause celebre indeed! A glass of wine. Maybe something heavier. If not, a coffee or tea, or some fruit juice.

Delight at new horizons traversed. New thought processes. A Josephian approach.

Speak and write that which others will step back from fearful or embittered, perhaps by cultural demands; a lifetime's vice-like grip that prevents true expression, that sees freedom of expression crushed when left in the custody of less bold hands, less confident minds.

Challenge!

Where darkness abides, bring forth light!

Light overcomes darkness, the darkness of men's minds aye, and women's too. Darkness retreats and tyrants freeze in the spotlight of exposure by fine lucid minds that probe, that search the night for that Mind Whose eyes range throughout the earth.

The price is heavy. And even if a regime has no thought for the challenge, lesser minds do! And lesser minds give way to whispers, to snides, to creeping often in the darkness of great pillars leading one's eye to the altar.

Writer, fear not.

Write in exactly the manner you have been gifted.

Seek not the darkened corners, the fear of the caverns of the mind; but rejoice, elucidate, bring into literature that which others would seek to crush… Keep in mind that such seeking is borne out of narrow minds locked into a stone-cold culture believing it to be the world, the universe even, when 'tis but a mark on the backs
of even greater, more ancient cultures.

This, our task! Aye ~ and what a task, too!

Lead, inspire, encourage; never think that there is a falling short of the mark. There is not!

As the Serotine is to woodland, so is your mind to the reader. Open wide their eyes, their understanding. Widen their perspective. I say again, Fear Not.

The night gives way to day. The Serotine is the bridge to Civilisation. Some would argue that this cannot be so. But created it is. And in the Eyes of the Creator it is beautiful beyond compare.
What? You speak, writer, of Creation? No, reader, no, doubter. I speak of those Eyes that range throughout the earth, as it is written.

Thus I lay down the pen, close the chapter, and sleep the sleep of peace and contentment.

A new day. A new life. I take up the pen again with vigour!

YES! Aye!! A New Chapter!!!

Ken Webb is a writer and proofreader. His website, kennwebb.com, showcases his work as a writer, blogger and podcaster, resting on his successive careers as a police officer, progressing to a junior lawyer in succession and trusts as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, a retired officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and latterly, for three years, the owner and editor of two lifestyle magazines in Liverpool.

He also just handed over a successful two year chairmanship in Gloucestershire with Cheltenham Regency Probus.

Pandemic aside, he spends his time equally between his city, Liverpool, and the county of his birth, Gloucestershire.

In this fast-paced present age, proof-reading is essential. And this skill also occasionally leads to copy-editing writers’ manuscripts for submission to publishers and also student and post graduate dissertations.
