Journal | Perspective is Paramount

WE WRITE OR SPEAK often on the moment’s spur. In other words, without thinking things through.

The moment’s spur is a very willing friend, a bedmate, even, to ‘emotion’.

I find I have to keep checking back. Have I a proper perspective? Or am I shooting from the hip?

I do worry, I admit, about China’s role in the world and China’s future. In Diary 2 History + Geography = Perspective I wrote about this. Yet, how easily one can exceed one’s own parameters!

On February 28, I drafted in pencil a long note about China. I put the book away and pulled it out at the weekend to see if there was draft work to be transcribed or worked on. I found the draft.

I watch the generally excellent weekly BBC Dateline London.

International journalists speak about events of the week. Sometimes, as we all do, I find myself thinking, oh no, I don’t agree. Then I remind myself I live in a thriving democracy and I sit here at 68 entirely because of the sacrifice made by the greatest generation, including two in my family who did not see the successful outcome of their endeavours. millions of us, worldwide, know this of our own families.

Ken Webb is a writer and proofreader. His website, kennwebb.com, showcases his work as a writer, blogger and podcaster, resting on his successive careers as a police officer, progressing to a junior lawyer in succession and trusts as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, a retired officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and latterly, for three years, the owner and editor of two lifestyle magazines in Liverpool.

He also just handed over a successful two year chairmanship in Gloucestershire with Cheltenham Regency Probus.

Pandemic aside, he spends his time equally between his city, Liverpool, and the county of his birth, Gloucestershire.

In this fast-paced present age, proof-reading is essential. And this skill also occasionally leads to copy-editing writers’ manuscripts for submission to publishers and also student and post graduate dissertations.
