Introduction by Alexander J Petricca
(October 2011)
For me, inspiration is what makes the world go round. It is the fuel that drives me; the reason I get out of bed every day. Without inspiration, there is no reason. So how does one get inspired? To discover the answer to this, perhaps we should put some thought into just what inspiration is.
I checked the dictionary. “Inspiration noun, the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.” All is well and good, but how do you get stimulated in the process? Well, you could look at other photographers’ work. There is, however, a fine line between copying, and inspiration. When does it become an inspiration? I think I’ve found the answer.
Poetry is an artistic medium. It is a method of unleashing creative energy and, for me, a method of inspiring others. To be offered a mental image of Autumn with her skirts billowing, or of the raid on Dieter’s home is quite an amazing experience. Such powerful words provoke this powerful mental imagery. It is my job to convert these thoughts, into real-life visuals.
I'm a watcher. I spend my life watching others, which leads to frequent accusations of daydreaming! I love to study people, the way the light falls upon them; their movements; the way they carry themselves and the way in which they interact with the world around them. This is what makes a portrait photographer. Not being able to master the technicals, but to be able to understand people, build that trust, and inevitably, be invited into their world. That is the way of the people photographer.
Being a born and bred Liverpudlian, it is a fantastic opportunity to be able to see another take on my home city in such a creative medium. To be able to have a coffee in the Copper Kettle, to take a walk along the Albert Dock, or to glance upwards in Lime Street station and see the enormous commander of time that is the Smith of Derby clock, lovingly known to millions down the ages just simply as Joyce of Whitchurch, greeting both visitors and welcoming home Scousers alike.
As a creative, a Liverpudlian and now a person proud to call Ken a friend, it is a great privilege to be working on this book.

Ken Webb is a writer and proofreader. His website, kennwebb.com, showcases his work as a writer, blogger and podcaster, resting on his successive careers as a police officer, progressing to a junior lawyer in succession and trusts as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, a retired officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and latterly, for three years, the owner and editor of two lifestyle magazines in Liverpool.
He also just handed over a successful two year chairmanship in Gloucestershire with Cheltenham Regency Probus.
Pandemic aside, he spends his time equally between his city, Liverpool, and the county of his birth, Gloucestershire.
In this fast-paced present age, proof-reading is essential. And this skill also occasionally leads to copy-editing writers’ manuscripts for submission to publishers and also student and post graduate dissertations.
